What’s in a Name?

books 2

I don’t know about other writers, but character names are really important to me. When I hit on the right one – no matter what baggage might be attached, as in the case of Keridwen, or pronunciation problems, which is a bit of a deal with Caoimhe – I can’t change it. The character grabs it, and lives in it, and makes it their name, and they refuse to answer to anything else.

And it’s really difficult when I read someone else’s work and realize that the character is fighting their name. I wonder if the writer is aware of this, I worry that the character is not getting the freedom and the scope they need to really act as themselves.
It’s very distracting.
